Speeding Revealed As Most Common Driving Conviction

Drivers with new diesel exhaust filters might be tempted to rev up their engine and hit the gas. However, motorists should always be mindful of obeying the speed limit after a report showed speeding is the most common reason for a driving conviction in the UK.

Admiral used data from over six million motorists to reveal the top ten driving convictions for British road users. The most common offence was exceeding the statutory speed limit on a public road; the second was exceeding the speed limit on a motorway; and the fourth is exceeding goods vehicle speed limits.

Head of motor at Admiral Sabine Williams reminded motorists to follow the road rules, saying: “Statistics show that those who have convictions or penalty points are more likely to be involved in an accident than those who have not.”

She added that not adhering to driving legislation “is dangerous to the driver and other individuals using the road”.

Speeding accounted for the majority of offences by policyholders, with owners of Mercedes GLE responsible for most speeding convictions, followed by Porsche Panamera drivers.

However, driving offences were not all regarding speeding, and other convictions included failure to comply with traffic light signals; mobile phone use while driving; drink-driving; and using a car that is not insured.

Blackpool was found to be the location where most people used mobile phones while behind the wheel, followed by Ipswich and Southend-on-Sea, suggesting coastal areas are the worst for this type of offence.

Earlier this summer, the government introduced new legislation allowing learner drivers to have lessons on motorways throughout England, Scotland and Wales. This will help them develop skills and confidence to be able to drive on these types of road safely, as well as build up familiarity and an understanding of road rules on motorways.
